Die Britin Sophie Ellis-Bextor beschreibt in ihrem Discopop-Hit einen Tanzwettbewerb, den sie gewillt ist, um jeden Preis zu gewinnen. Das Musikvideo zeigt passend dazu eine Tanzwettbewerbszene á la Grease, die Sophie Ellis-Bextor am Ende für sich entscheidet – allerdings auf nicht ganz ehrlichem Weg: 

Einer Mitstreiterin stellt sie zum Beispiel das Bein, eine andere lässt sie auf einem Stück Butter ausrutschen, drei Tänzer werden von ihr vergiftet und auch die Jury bleibt nicht verschont. Am Ende triumphiert das Böse über das Gute, wie es die Sängerin selbst beschreibt.

"Murder On The Dancefloor" wurde im Dezember 2001 als Single veröffentlicht und war Sophie Ellis-Bextors größter internationaler Erfolg: Er landete weltweit in den Top Ten und soll in Europa der meistgespielte Song 2002 gewesen sein. Sie schrieb den Track gemeinsam mit Gregg Alexander für ihr Debütalbum Read My Lips.

Im Januar 2024 landete "Murder On The Dancefloor" dank Saltburn erneut in den UK Top Ten und ist damit Sophie Ellis-Bextors erste Top Ten-Single seit 2007.

"Murder On The Dancefloor" wird in der letzten Szene von Saltburn gespielt, einem satirischen Thriller, der seit dem 22. Dezember auf Amazon Prime Video verfügbar ist und definitiv einen Hype ausgelöst hat. Nicht zuletzt auf TikTok, wo neben Reaction-Aufnahmen gerne auch besagte "Murder On The Dancefloor"-Szene von Barry Keoghan nachgestellt wird. Inzwischen sogar von Sophie Ellis-Baxtor selbst:

Dazu, dass ihr 23 Jahre alter Song nach dem Erfolg von Saltburn wieder in den Charts landet, sagt Sophie Ellis-Baxtor:

Das Phänomen ist nicht ganz neu – ähnlich verhielt es sich auch mit "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" von Kate Bush: Nachdem der Song 2022 eine zentrale Rolle in einer Szene von Stranger Things gespielt hat, landete er nach 37 Jahren wieder auf Platz 1.
