Ein... irgendwie feministischer Song?

Hach ja, das Jahr 2000. Ein ganz neues Millennium der Menschheitsgeschichte. Die Leute waren glücklich und ausgelassen, dass zum neuen Jahr nicht plötzlich alle Computer explodiert sind und die Welt nicht untergegangen ist. Kurz schienen alle Probleme vergessen zu sein, das Überleben stand im Vordergrund gefühlt endloser Feiereien, sodass sich auch die Musikwelt in dem Jahr eher mit dem Kreieren von Partyhits beschäftig hat. Songs ohne tiefere Bedeutung. Hauptsache catchy, hauptsache einfach zum Mitsingen. So schien es zumindest. Was könnte sonst hinter Lyrics wie "Who let the dogs out? Who, who, who, who, who?" stecken? Nunja, wie sich erst viele Jahre später herausstellen sollte: Eine feministische Botschaft!

Der wahre Hintergrund des Songs wurde erst 2016 öffentlich

Anslem Douglas, ein Musiker aus Trininad und Tobago, hat 1996 mit seinem Calypso-Song "Doggie" die Basis für "Who Let The Dogs Out" geschaffen. Er ist es, der nach Jahren zwar nicht die Frage klärt, wer denn nun die Hunde rausgelassen hat, dafür aber verrät, wer die Hunde überhaupt sind: Männer! Sich richtig schlecht benehmende Männer, um genauer zu sein, nämlich Männer, die Frauen mit sexualisierten Kommentaren, Pfiffen oder Ähnlichem auf der Straße sexuell belästigen. Es geht geht also ums Catcalling.

Das verrät der Musiker in einem Interview gegenüber der Huffington Post. Sein Schwager hätte oft den Ausdruck "Who Let the Dogs Out?!" verwendet, wenn er eigentlich unartige Männer meinte. Der Schwager war es schließlich auch, der Anslem auf die Idee brachte, daraus einen Song zu machen:

"He used to come in and say, 'Who let the dogs out?!' And one time he asked me, 'Why don't you turn this into a song?' And the rest is history." - Anslem Douglas

Nun machen die Lyrics abseits von "Who let the dogs out? / Who, who, who, who, who?" auch Sinn: Wir befinden uns auf einer Party, einer angenehmen Party, bei der alle Spaß haben, bis irgendwelche Typen plötzlich anfangen, rumzugrölen und andere zu belästigen, woraufhin eine der Frauen schließlich ausruft: "Wer hat die Hunde rausgelassen???"

"Well, the party was nice, the party was pumpin' [...] And everybody havin' a ball [...] I tell the fellas start the name callin' [...] And the girls respond to the call - I heard a woman shout out: Who let the dogs out? Who, who, who, who, who? Who let the dogs out? Who, who, who, who, who?"

Ferner im Song werden Männer dann noch mit räudigen, ungepflegten Hunden verglichen. Männer, die der Meinung sind, dass die Frauen, die sich über die Belästigung empören, einfach nur mal chillen sollten.

Wir können dem Song also nicht puren Nonsense vorwerfen...

Was wir aber können, ist zu kritisieren, dass hier good Boyyyys und feine Bubububus mit rückständigen Männern gleichgesetzt werden, die Frauen zum Objekt machen, ihnen hirnlos hinterher bellen und hecheln... Aber vorher singen wir nochmal alle mit:
