Ein Song über die Einsamkeit

In "Under the Bridge" teilt Red Hot Chili Peppers-Frontmann Anthony Kiedis seine innersten Gedanken an Momente, die von Heroinsucht und tiefster Einsamkeit geprägt waren. Als der Text entstand war er bereits clean und fuhr gerade nachts mit dem Auto von einer Bandprobe nach Hause. Zwei Jahre zuvor war Gründungsmitglied Hillel Slovak an einer Überdosis Heroin gestorben und Kiedis hat sich auch aufgrund seines Clean-Seins unter seinen Bandkollegen (die zu der Zeit Marihuana rauchten und sich mehr und mehr anfreundeten) hin und wieder sehr alleine gefühlt. Er hatte manchmal den Eindruck, dass Los Angeles alles war, was ihm blieb.

Er erinnert sich im Auto auch an einen Tag in Los Angeles, den er selbst als einen Tiefpunkt seines Lebens bezeichnet. Er war damals noch schwer abhängig und mit einem Bekannten auf der Suche nach Heroin, bis sie schließlich unter einer Brücke das nächste High fanden.

Dazu sagte Kiedis 1991 in einem Interview:

"What that was referring to was a point in time about five years ago when I had nothing in my life, I had no friends or places to live or automobiles or relationships with my family." - Anthony Kiedis

Niemals wollte er sich mehr so verloren fühlen, wie an diesem Tag unter der Brücke.

I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day

Ohne groß darüber nachzudenken sang er all diese Zeilen während der Fahrt vor sich hin - und so entstand mal eben der komplette Song. 

Und so sehr "Under the Bridge" vor allem ein Song über die Einsamkeit ist, steckt doch auch Hoffnung darin. Denn damals im Auto hatte er es aus der Sucht heraus geschafft, war clean und merkte, wie er später in einem Interview erzählt: "The place I love is where I am now".

Dass all diese Zeilen allerdings mal ein Songtext werden, wusste Kiedis damals im Auto noch nicht.

Er schrieb den Text zwar daheim in Songform nieder, betrachtete die Worte aber trotzdem mehr als Gedicht. Für zu sanft, zu emotional, zu traurig hielt er den Text damals, als dass er sich für einen Red Hot Chili Peppers Song eignen würde. Immerhin spielten sie bis dahin fast ausschließlich Funk.

Eines Tages entdeckte allerdings Produzent Rick Rubin den Text in einem Notizbuch von Kiedis. Rubin war direkt sehr emotional ergriffen und sah darin durchaus die Lyrics für einen Red Hot Chili Peppers Song. Kiedis Bandkollegen sahen das genauso.

"My thinking was that the Chili Peppers were not limited to being a funk band with rapping. And I remember Anthony was embarrassed to show the song to the other guys in the band. But he sang it to John and John came up with his part. Then he played it for Flea [bassist] and Flea came up with his part. And it ended up being a really good song—even though they didn't realize how good it was until people starting responding to it." - Rick Rubin

Und so entstand die erste Ballade der Red Hot Chili Peppers

Obwohl - oder vielleicht gerade weil - eine so schwere Ballade so untypisch für den damaligen Sound der Band war, kam der Song unfassbar gut an und berührte die Hörer*innen. "Under the Bridge" landete auf Platz zwei der Billboard Hot 100 Charts und in vielen anderen Ländern in den Top Ten und brachte mehrere Auszeichnungen. Heute heißt es, der Song hat den Red Hot Chili Peppers ihren Durchbruch verschafft und den Weg in den Mainstream geebnet.

"Under The Bridge" erschien 1991 auf dem Album Blood Sugar Sex Magik und 1992 als Singleauskopplung. Um welche Brücke genau es bei "Under the Brigde" geht, hat Kiedis nicht verraten. Aber ein solcher Ort sollte vielleicht auch wirklich keiner werden, an dem sich Fans und Musikinteressierte aus Neugier tummeln.

1995 hatte Anthony Kiedis einen Rückfall, seit 2000 ist er clean.
