This is the Kit zu Gast bei Gloria: Das Interview zum Nachhören

Während Kate Stables alias This Is The Kit in ihrer Wohnung in Paris sitzt, wo gerade wieder eine Ausgangssperre eingeführt wurde, ist ihr neues Album erschienen.

Im Interview mit egoFM Gloria spricht sie über die neue Platte, wie die Zusammenarbeit mit The National ihr eigenes Songwriting beeinflusst hat und warum sie trotz Pandemie optimistisch in die Zukunft blickt.

Off Off On: Ein neues Album mitten in der Corona-Krise

Die Pandemie hat uns fest im Griff - auch für Musiker*innen ist 2020 alles anders. Touren und Konzerte sind abgesagt, ebenso wie die meisten Promotermine, Reisen ins Ausland sind so gut wie gar nicht möglich.

Wie fühlt es sich an, in dieser Zeit ein Album zu releasen?

"It feels good, that the album's finally out. Because I've been working on it and kind of living inside it for so long now. I almost can't believe that no-one else has heard it yet (...) I think releasing a record always feels a bit weird for me. But it's even stranger now because there's no release gig - normally there'd be some kind of concert or party to celebrate it being released. But because we can't really get together or travel or whatever, it's just going to be a bit of 'it's out now, guys'..."

Auch ohne die Pandemie fühlt es sich für Kate immer ein wenig seltsam an, ihre Songs in die Welt rauszuschicken. Vor allem, wenn sie sie schon so lange begleitet haben.

Das war bei Off Off On der Fall - aber nicht, weil Kate getrödelt hat - sie wurde sozusagen bei ihrer Arbeit an dem Album von einer Band, die du als egoFM Musiklieblinge auch sehr gut kennst, unterbrochen - The National: 

"...Bryce (Dessner) was living in Paris and needed some singers to try some stuff out on the new record they were working on - and so I was one of them and they kept some of the bits. (...) So I ended up helping out on tour and do a bit of singing for the live shows. So that was really nice."

Also ging Kate mit The National auf Tour und konnte ihre Songs von unterwegs weiter schreiben. Ist Off Off On also auch von dem Sound von The National beeinflusst?

"Probably, I mean, it must have done. Because your surroundings are always gonna soak into what you do. Just the fact of being on the road, of traveling and seeing all of these new lands, places and people - I think it's very nourishing for the pace and rhythm of what you write. So I think this had quite a big effect."

Eine wissenschaftliche Kontrolle, wieviel von dem Sound der Dessner-Brüder einen bleibenden Einfluss auf ihr neues Album hinterlassen hat, gebe es aber nicht, meint Kate. Wir vermuten: zumindest ein kreativer Austausch war da. Schließlich hat Aaron Dessner schon ihre letzte Platte produziert.

Trotzdem: This Is The Kit hat ihren ganz eigenen Sound, der sich am ehesten als eine Mischung aus Folk, Jazz und Indie beschreiben lässt und sich über ihr gesamtes Leben entwickelt hat. 

"It's a big long journey isn't it, the music we listen to throughout our lifetime. And I'm still getting influenced now, I'm still discovering new stuff and getting excited by it. (...) But I can never hear the music I listen to in the music I make - but it must be there somewhere."

Die Message von Off Off On

Am wichtigsten sei es, in einer Zeit wie jetzt positiv und optimistisch zu bleiben, sagt Kate. Auch wenn wir mal kurz vergessen, dass wir gerade mit einer Pandemie leben müssen, gibt es viele andere Bereiche, auf die das zutrifft - zumindest könnte man den Albumtitel Off Off On so interpretieren, oder?

"It would be nice to turn off the selfishness, which seems to be a little bit of a disease at the moment. People thinking about themselves a lot and not thinking about the wider community - about people that need help. It'd be good to (...) turn on a lot more empathy and just imagining ourselves in someone else's position and being a bit more tolerant and understanding. And just welcoming of diversity and difference, as well. Cause I think humans forget that it's important to be different - we keep thinking that everyone's got to be the same, but it's not true."
