Über das neue Album 'SHISH' und Alaska

Sie sind absolute Indie-Lieblinge und mit ihrem Song "Feel It Still" natürlich auch im Mainstream bekannt. Jjetzt erscheint das neue Album 'SHISH' von Portugal. The Man.

Alaska prägt Portugal. The Man

Für das Album ist John Gourley durch Alaska gereist, wo er aufgewachsen ist, und hat sich mit vielen Native Alaskans unterhalten. Wie Land und Leute und Themen wie Umweltschutz dieses Album geprägt haben, erzählt er im Interview mit egoFM Gloria:

"My Alaskan upbringing [...] I realized recently, as we were travelling around: Where we grow up - at least for me - is just a huge part of my being. I really feel at home when I can be out in the Tundra [...] and just walk as far as I wanna walk. I can point to a peak, and I just try to walk to it. That's where I feel at home. The album is full of these lists of things. I did not do that intentionally as we were writing, it was all just stream of conciousness." - John Gourley von Portugal. The Man

Portugal. The Man über die Grammys

Zusehen zu müssen, wie diese einzigartige Natur durch Großbauprojekte wie die von Donald Trump genehmigte Straße "Ambler-Access-Road" zerstört wird, schmerzt ihn. Und es gibt noch ein Thema, für das sich John Gourley unermüdlich einsetzt: Seine Tochter Francis lebt mit einer seltenen Erkrankung. Um weitere Forschung über ihre und weitere seltene Krankheiten zu finanzieren, hat John gemeinsam mit seiner Frau eine Charity-Organisation "Frances Changed My Life" (angelehnt an den Titel des letzten Portugal. The Man Albums) gegründet, um Spenden zu sammeln und Forschungsarbeit zu finanzieren. Bei all dem Aktivismus, bedeutet es da eigentlich irgendwas, für seine kreative Arbeit einen Grammy gewonnen zu haben?

Because you do kind of feel like 'we are just making music, like, this is so silly [...] We just want to go play with our friends. Can I get back to playing now?'
