Mount Kimbie über 'The Sunset Violent'

Warum du Mount Kimbie kennen solltest

Seit 15 Jahren macht das britische Duo Mount Kimbie bestehend aus Dom Maker und Kai Campos immer wieder auf sich aufmerksam: zunächst durch experimentellen Elektrosound, bei dem sie aber permanent an anderen Genres entlanggeschrammt sind, von Post-Dubstep, über R'n'B bis Ambient und Post Punk. Sie arbeiteten bereits mit Artists wie James Blake, Travis Scott oder King Krule zusammen und man war sich vom Sound her nie ganz sicher, ob es sich nun um eine reine Elektro-Produktion oder eine Band handelt.

Das neue Album von Mount Kimbie: The Sunset Violent

Auf dem neuen Album The Sunset Violent, das am 5. April 2024 via Warp Records veröffentlicht wurde, sind Mount Kimbie mehr Band als je zuvor: Zur festen Besetzung gesellen sich die Musiker*innen Andrea Balency-Béarn und Marc Pell, die bereits seit Jahren zur Liveband gehören. Auf dem neuen Album manifestiert sich dies mit dem Sound von shoegazigen und postpunkigen Gitarren und Vocals von Andrea und Dom. Ansonsten zu hören ist auch wieder der Virtuose King Krule, der die Songs "Boxing" und "Empty and Silent" featurt.

Wie The Sunset Violent entstanden ist

The Sunset Violent folgt auf die Werke Crooks & Lovers (2010), Cold Spring Fault Less Youth (2013), Love What Survives (2017) und MK 3.5: Die Cuts | City Planning (2022). Für Mount Kombie fühlt sich die Lücke wie eine Ewigkeit an – nach dem letzten Studioalbum haben sie sich erstmal voneinander distanziert und auf eigene Projekte fokussiert.

"There's like a big gap after we finished touring the last [album], you know, everybody needed to walk away from it for a little bit and do something else because [...] we worked to tour that album a lot and you just have had enough of the songs. You wanna, you know, come up with new ideas, plan to have some time off from the projects. And then there's also around the period that Dom had moved and then kind of what probably would have been like two-year gap became like so much longer just because of COVID and so then we were just following other little projects that we were interested in individually, but I think, yeah, we weren't anticipating it being that long. It was this two-year period right at the end of it where it was really difficult to move around and we never really worked by sending files on the Internet and I don't think we were really interested in doing that, so kind of felt at the first opportunity was this like this time that we're doing it now." - Kai Campos

Nachdem die Bandmitglieder dann quer über den Globus verteilt waren, fanden sich Mount Kimbie für The Sunset Violent also mit stark reduziertem Musikequipment in einer kleinen Stadt in der kalifornischen Wüste – Yucca Valley – wieder zusammen, in der es eigentlich nichts gab außer einem sehr guten Sushi-Restaurant. Das ist übrigens auch im Video zu "Fishbrain" zu sehen. 

"It's weird because for some reason the the sushi in that desert is really, really good and really fresh. It's bizarre."

Neben absurd frischem Sushi wirkte sich besonders die Atmosphäre der US-amerikanischen Wüste auf den Klang des Albums aus:

"The desert was very formative in how we view the album, just really like visually, you know it's such a wide open space and it's so foreign compared to where we usually work in like a, you know studio with with no window. And there was something in that kind of scale. And, you know, the classic kind of American big muscle cars and four by four trucks, you know, just seemingly without need. [...] Well, just mainly the sort of conception of the ideas really came from that. So a lot of the roots of the record was written out there." - Dom Maker

Worum es auf The Sunset Violent geht

Einen besonderen Einfluss auf das Songwriting des Albums hatten frühere Werke von The Strokes oder The Pixies. Dom Maker beschreibt, wie mindblowing beispielsweise die Lyrics von "Where Is My Mind?" von den Pixies für ihn in Anbetracht des Writing-Prozesses für The Sunset Violent war:

"Looking into some of the lyrics that were written there, [...] for example 'Where Is My Mind?', just about his experience of snorkelling in - I think - Barbados and just basically writing about the fish around him - that was really inspiring in terms of taking a bit of the pressure of being like: 'What do you want to say [on the record]?' You know, I don't really want to say anything with it. But I've always had quite a good sort of ability with writing creatively and definitely making short stories about sort of fictional situations and stuff, so I just let that kind of happen very naturally." - Dom Maker

Wer für Lyrics und Vocals zuständig ist, hat auch bisschen mehr in der Hand, um was es inhaltlich auf der Platte geht. Um was es also auf The Sunset Violent geht, hat Dom Maker von Mount Kimbie im Interview erzählt:

"I think if there's a theme across the record in terms of the vocals, it would probably be, you know, trying to kind of navigate life and the challenges that it throws at you trying to take the moments when you fall off of the right track with a little hint of kind of at comedy, a little bit not taking it too seriously."  - Dom Maker

Genau dieses Gefühl wird mit "Fishbrain" besonders gut vermittelt. Abfuck mit Augenzwinkern:
