Übers neue Album 'Loss Of Life'

MGMT - eine Indie-Größe, die man kennen muss

Mit Oracular Spectacular bringen MGMT 2007 weltbekannte Hits wie "Electric Feel" oder "Kids" hervor und werden dafür auch für einen Grammy nominiert. Die anschließenden Alben Congratulations (2010) und das selbstbetitelte Werk MGMT (2013) werden eher in der eingefleischten Fan-Community gefeiert, als von der breiten Masse. 2018 erscheint dann das Album Little Dark Age, dessen Songs Jahre später plötzlich auf TikTok für Videos über verschiedene politische Themen wie etwa Transrechte oder den Angriffskrieg auf Ukraine verwendet und dadurch gerade bei jüngeren Menschen populär werden. Das Duo, bestehend aus Andrew VanWyngarden und Ben Goldwasser, findet das ziemlich interessant, wie unterschiedlich ihre Songs teilweise interpretiert werden:

"It was a really cool feeling, especially to see it taking off [...] when people use tracks on TikTok, [...] there's a lot of creativity that goes into how they're interpreting it. And I think we always want people to have their own creative interpretations of our music." - Ben Goldwasser

"It was sort of surprising to see how wide of a spectrum of interpretation there was. I mean from, like you said, trans rights to really dark neo fascist videos. It was just very strange. [...] You really can't control how someone's gonna interpret something or wants to use it, so that part was a little strange. But to be sort of taken in by this generation that is using these platforms that Ben and I really don't participate in was pretty wild. You know, if it was sort of also fulfilling as an artist to know that a song that we wrote can connect with younger audiences still." - Andrew VanWyngarden

2024 veröffentlichen MGMT ihr neues Album Loss of Life

Das neue Album Loss of Life mag vom Titel her nicht viel positiver klingen als der Vorgänger Little Dark Age, aber MGMT gehen musikalisch und inhaltlich dieses Mal in eine andere Richtung: Die Songs sind hoffnungsvoller, direkter und leichter zugänglich.

Während sie sich selbstbewusst aus den Genres Britpop, Glam bis Grunge bedienen, ist dennoch bei jedem Song zu erkennen: Das sind MGMT. Das weiß die Band auch selbst und hat sich deswegen bewusst von der düsteren Ära verabschiedet. Der Titel wurde allerdings absichtlich so gewählt, dass er erstmal in die Irre führt:

"It was on purpose [...] that if people saw the title Loss of Life, they would kind of just assume that we had gotten more depressed and we're about to make a goth-metal album or something. And and in fact, we sort of went the other direction in terms of the the energy and and we sort of ditched a lot of the cynicism and [chose a] more - I don't know - absurd or sarcastic approach to dealing with the world being terrible and and tried to figure out a way to manage being a human that's more about connecting through love and relationships and and stuff." - Andrew VanWyngarden
